All Shook Up In Japan

Just as I start to write this blog entry the NHK station that I incessantly stay tuned into reports an upcoming earthquake warning… yet again. Since Friday March 11, there have been over 300 after-shocks only about 40 of which I can remember actually feeling or experiencing. Also, if the only news you have is from Wolf Blitzer on CNN, then you are drastically misled about the current situation.Since I was small child I have experienced four major natural disasters – the first was typhoon Pamela when I was 11 years old growing up on Guam. Then the 1989 San … Continue reading All Shook Up In Japan

Playing With Python…. Trying To Get Back To Pictures

Over the last couple of months have really enjoyed studying, coding, debugging a bunch of Python code, but last weekend I got the photo bug again. Going to make it a point to pick up the cameras this weekend and organize photos and shoot a few. Stay tuned. If you are a WorkPapers user and are looking for a next release update, please visit that blog at http://workpapers.pro/blog.After BASIC, Pascal, C, C++, Perl, Objective-C, RealBASIC, and Java, I have found Python! For the cloudy world that we live in these days, with applications being split between the web and desktop (e.g., … Continue reading Playing With Python…. Trying To Get Back To Pictures

Web App To Desktop App

Exactly one year ago when I started on the latest iteration of WorkPapers.Pro, the web application development took front and center position, and a desktop integration was an after-thought… for a couple of reasons. First, I had already developed about four different versions of the desktop application in multiple languages, so was not worried about generating another iteration to accommodate the web application rapidly. On the other hand, developing a web application for the internet (versus intranet) was a new experience and took more time. The release times reveal this. The web application took about nine months to develop into its … Continue reading Web App To Desktop App

Addicted To Web Apps – 11 Services I Use

Posting this blog entry to inventory the web apps that I have signed up for over the past year, and to provide a brief commentary on what I think of them. 1) Google – excellent offering for the price. $50 a year amd you get just about everything to run a virtual office, including collaboration.2) Yahoo! – Premium email has undergone a major facelift and is a great location to integrate all thos ‘other’ email addresses one accumulates.3) .Mac or .Me…. whatever – a control freak rip-off. Don’t buy it.4) Salesforce – a great product, especially if you get the … Continue reading Addicted To Web Apps – 11 Services I Use

‘Tis The Season…. To Play With Gadgets

Merry Christmas All! I got online the other day and took a look at this site to realize how long it has been since I had posted an update. Despite the long silence, Google Analytics is showing some good statistics, so I am scratching my head on that one a bit.On to gadgets!First, bah humbug…. I have used the iPhone faithfully for the past three years and really liked the device until I found that no matter how well you take care; no matter how diligently you handle the device – buying special cases, only putting the device in your … Continue reading ‘Tis The Season…. Another WorkPapers Milestone – Desktop Release

Lately, in this blog I try not go on about my pet software project, but cannot help to brag about some milestones. So, I’ve finally done it! About four years ago when I finished the RealBASIC version of WorkPapers (v2x) for Mac and Windows, I started to create a web version, but never got to it…. just could not stretch my time  to make yet another version. The press release is here. This time around I started with the web version of WorkPapers, then went to the drawing board with an almost identical desktop version – interface and function. This led … Continue reading Another WorkPapers Milestone – Desktop Release

WorkPapers Desktop Coming Soon

The upcoming release of WorkPapers desktop software will be the third major release version written in yet a third, different programming language. I started with the release of the original WorkPapers in late 2004, which was a Mac only version written in Objective-C/Cocoa. Soon after that release, I developed a RealBASIC version of the software, since there was an obvious demand for a multi-platform version of the software. This second version sold quite well, but with RealBASIC, was real difficult to maintain and customize as much as end users (and myself) wanted. To meet the multi-platform demand and the long range … Continue reading WorkPapers Desktop Coming Soon

Is It Time To Start Blocking All China IPs?

And I’m not kidding…. I did a clean OS and web server install last week for the new web site on WorkPapers.Pro (getting ready for an upcoming software update and September 1 press release), so about one week later, like a good admin, I thought it was time to sip some coffee and go through the authorization logs. There was the usual Eastern European and former Soviet block IPs, so I blocked those, then there were a couple out of the US, so I blocked those IPs. You’d think that I would follow-up on the US IPs these days, but understanding … Continue reading Is It Time To Start Blocking All China IPs?

Let The Tablet Wars Begin

This morning I had the great opportunity to sneak-peak the Samsung Galaxy tablet. Not yet released in Japan, so this was a ‘special’ occasion made available to preview Samsung’s morsel of toy. I have to say, ‘it is nice’. The accelerometer, the touch screen, the screen is all really nice. Okay, okay, you know there is a big BUT coming….Here is a nice picture and article from Reuters.I do not know how to describe what I am about to write, so I’ll be careful. What I notice with the my wife’s Android phone, I also see in the Galaxy tablet … Continue reading Let The Tablet Wars Begin
